Donald Trump to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during Scotland trip

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she’ll meet with President Trump in Scotland on Sunday to discuss trade relations.

The meeting comes as the clock ticks down to an Aug. 1 deadline when Mr. Trump has threatened to impose 30% tariffs on goods imported from the European Union.

“Following a good call with @POTUS, we have agreed to meet in Scotland on Sunday to discuss transatlantic trade relations and how we can keep them strong,” Ms. von der Leyen posted on X.

Mr. Trump, who will be staying at his properties in Scotland until Tuesday, told reporters Friday that there was a “50/50 chance” that the U.S. would reach a trade deal with the EU.

“We’re working very diligently with Europe, the EU, which covers a lot of dirt, a lot of countries. And that’s the big one right now,” Mr. Trump said, adding that Brussels “wanted to make a deal very badly.”

After Mr. Trump announced that the U.S. would impose a 30% tariff on goods from the EU, the bloc’s leaders fired back that they would impose countermeasures on the $100 billion worth of goods imported from the U.S. if the tariffs go into effect.

The president has for years asserted that the EU imposes harsh trade barriers on the U.S., even claiming that the union was formed to “screw” America.

The negotiations come as the U.S. reached a series of deals with other trading partners in recent days.

Earlier this week, the Trump administration completed a pact with Japan, perhaps serving as a template for any agreement with the EU.

The Trump team also announced outlines of trade deals with China, Indonesia and the Philippines, though details are pending.
