A Christian advocacy group is calling on India to end its persecution of Christians within its borders.
International Christian Concern, citing the Union of Catholic Asian News, said about 50 men this month ransacked a church and assaulted its pastor in Gopalpuri, a town in Gujarat, India.
Last month, a mob destroyed the church’s roof, water tank and water-based air coolers, the advocacy group said. A Pentecostal church was attacked in Hatkeshwar, an area in the city of Ahmedabad, and another threatened in the village of Pachpedi Bakhara, the group said, citing UCA News.
“Hindu extremists are waging a vicious campaign against India’s Christians,” International Christian Concern President Jeff King said in a statement. “Pastors are being beaten, churches torched, and mobs are acting with impunity under the shadow of BJP rhetoric.”
“[Indian Prime Minister] Narendra Modi’s deafening silence as radical Hindu mobs attack pastors and burn churches in Chhattisgarh and across India emboldens a culture of persecution that threatens India’s Christian minority,” Mr. King said. “His inaction is intentional complicity and a cornerstone of the escalating violence against believers, and the world must hold him accountable before this crisis spirals further.”
