Anthropic Bites The $10,000,000 Hand That Feeds It In New Logo Lawsuit Over An ‘A’

Artificial intelligence giant Anthropic sued a major paying customer for trademark infringement over a similar logo.

Anthropic demanded in a July 1 lawsuit that Abnormal remove the parallel slash from its logo, so consumers do not confuse it for Anthropic’s logo, Axios reported. All Abnormal employees use Anthropic’s Claude, and Evan Reiser, the AI security platform’s CEO, projected it will spend $10 million on Anthropic this year, according to an Abnormal blog post.

“This additional element [the “\”] in the Infringing Logo is not merely an insignificant alteration; it is the defining feature that creates confusing similarity with Anthropic’s Mark, and its introduction fundamentally changes the commercial impression of the mark,” the lawsuit said.

“Anthropic has to be proactive about protecting its registered trademarks or it risks diluting them and fostering confusion in the marketplace,” technology lawyer Denise Howell told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“Anthropic’s case looks pretty strong based on the similarity of the logos and the fact they’re in the same field.  Trademark law is all about preventing confusion, and the chances of confusion seem pretty high here.  Abnormal just dropped the A’s crossbar,” she added.

Anthropic, Anthropic’s outside legal counsel Morrison & Foerster, Reiser and Abnormal AI each did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment.

“Abnormal was built by inventing, not copying … [T]he accusation that we copied another company to deceive customers is so personally offensive. It is the opposite of who we are,” Reiser said in the blog post.

“I have been a major Anthropic user and advocate. My personal Anthropic account will spend ~$1M this year (Abnormal will be >$10M),” Reiser added.

The AI security firm was a paying customer since at least January 2025, so “Abnormal adopted the Infringing Marks with actual knowledge of Anthropic’s prior rights,” according to the lawsuit.

“On August 18, 2025, Anthropic … contacted Abnormal, noting that the parties’ logos were ‘quite similar’ and requesting that Abnormal change the stylization of its mark,” the lawsuit stated. “Abnormal’s Legal Director responded that Abnormal believed the logos were distinct and that the companies operated in ‘different markets.’”

The suit aims to safeguard Anthropic’s trademarks, not harm Abnormal’s business, the company told Axios.

Howell told the DCNF that her guess is “Abnormal will settle this quickly and stop using that logo.”

“They may have some arguments to make about the generic natures of letters and the term ‘AI,’ but the visual similarities of the two logos seem likely to carry the day,” she added.
