Introduction
A quick glance at social media reveals a growing debate over what data centers mean for communities economically. Many Americans are unaware of how many jobs they support and what kinds of jobs. While more data is needed, the available evidence illustrates a clear pattern of economic impact: More high-paying jobs in the community.
Data centers create jobs in two distinct phases: (1) typically high-paying construction and skilled trade jobs during project development, and (2) a specific number of permanent jobs in the community, determined by the type and characteristics of the data center project.
Data centers also provide tangential benefits to the job market through property tax revenue, community investment, and workforce development programs.
