The midterms this cycle are as confusing as the new world order is in general. Historically, the midterms have never been good for the sitting President. In the last 50 years, the President has maintained Congress’s support only once, for the first four years in office. Carter is the only President in this 50-year window whose Party kept both chambers after the first midterm election (1978). It is hard to justify that anomaly with possibly the worst President ever, double-digit inflation, 15% mortgage rates, and a floundering country. The odds are stacked against Trump keeping the House and Senate. Trump will not be on the ticket, but Trump hatred will be paramount in the voter’s mind. A divided Executive and Legislative Washington makes passing bills or advancing an agenda virtually impossible. Some may say that even with control of the Oval and the Hill, Washington has been completely impotent. Without Executive Order, we would have seen little of Trump’s vision brought into focus. Unfortunately, EOs are only as good as the person behind the Resolute desk. If a Democrat or worse, a Socialist, were to win the hot seat in 2028, all of Trump’s orders would be reversed before the first ball ends.
This year, the Republicans had everything lined up to buck the trend and give us two more MAGA years. The Left is void of any leadership, and the DSA wing is completely fracturing the Party into moderates and extremes. You have Cortez and Sanders embracing the new wave Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries disavowing their existence while putting a new addition on the Big Tent, and many Dems, and some DSA candidates doing their best Judas impersonation, keeping more distance than masked minions during COVID. It would be fun to watch, except it is sad to see people running for office, winning primaries, and wanting to tear it all down. That is a very long intro, but it brings us to Iran.
Though there have been very few casualties in the Iran conflict, it is a very unfavorable and unwanted conflict, and one that the Democrats try to convince America that we are wasting blood and treasure. Far too many people are unconcerned with a rogue regime obtaining nuclear weapons. They do not see a threat and probably would have taken a seat and watched Germany and Japan rule the world. Like many people who back the war, I felt that Trump had to end it in the spring or we would sacrifice the midterms. I felt that unless gas prices came down to $3 a gallon, the Democrats would walk all over us to grab the gavel. I don’t think either needs to happen for us to survive November without a Blue Wave. People may not fear a crazy leader with nukes, but they certainly are petrified about a Party that wants to open the border, close all prisons and jails, defund the police and military, and tax everything that doesn’t move.
Anything can happen, and polls are so inaccurate they are totally useless, but I think that Trump’s patience not to level Iran is going to dodge one of the crazy new drones that have replaced tanks and Humvees. Americans will pay $4 a gallon if the government will let them keep their company, and ICE may still hunt the streets of small-town America, looking for illegals with longer rap sheets than a high school diploma. I could be completely wrong, but we will know for sure in just two months, and then we have a day or two before the masses start campaigning for the White House.
