MIDLAND, Mich. — The Mackinac Center for Public Policy invites Michigan high school students and young adults to submit an original two-minute speech or video explaining why free markets are better than socialism.
The statewide contest asks participants to make a clear, persuasive case for economic freedom, competition, entrepreneurship, innovation, or individual liberty. Entries may take the form of a traditional speech or use storytelling and visuals to illustrate why freedom produces better outcomes for individuals and communities.
The contest includes two divisions:
- Michigan High School Division: Open to students in grades 9-12.
- Michigan Young Adult Division: Open to Michigan residents ages 18-24.
A panel of judges will select winners in each division. Each division will award $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place.
Entries must be original, created and delivered by one person, and no longer than two minutes.
Submissions are due by the end of the year (Dec. 31, 2026). Applicants can review the rules and submit an entry HERE.
