Democrats should explain why ‘Woke 1’ was crazy

Eddie Scarry writes for the Federalist about holding Democrats accountable for their crazy ideas.

No one who lived through the past 10 years should allow Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to giggle away the hell called “woke” that she and Democrats inflicted on the country. It can’t possibly be that easy for them to move on from what they did just because they know it’s unpopular and it complicates things for their leaders wanting to run for president in 2028.

In an interview last weekend on ABC, Ocasio-Cortez was asked about the countless naggy, bitter, and anti-American declarations now-former Democrat gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong made in public over a number of years. (My personal favorite being her 2020 magazine article in which Hong, who previously owned a ramen noodle restaurant and is obviously not white, bemoaned the food service industry’s “deep roots in white supremacy.”)

“She’s moved away from it,” said Ocasio-Cortez, matter-of-factly. Then, with a hearty chuckle, she said, “And I have a local city councilman that has this saying: ‘Woke 1 was crazy.’”

Ocasio-Cortez continued, observing that “the discussions that were had in [2020] were quite fruitful” but that “of course, rhetoric in that time is not rhetoric that we would use today.”

Of course not! “Woke 1” drove a 30 percent spike in the U.S. murder rate as well as sharp increases in virtually all other types of crime, including robbery, vandalism, and theft. AOC’s answer for that is to ask that voters at least kindly remember how “fruitful” those “defund the police” discussions were.

If Ocasio-Cortez and presumably other Democrats are ready to marginalize and move on from the policy positions and views they branded themselves with for years, they can’t be let off the hook with a wink and smile. They should be required to account for specific policies they no longer support.

If they’re no longer in favor of abolishing ICE and defunding the police, why? Does that mean they would allocate money for those agencies’ budgets? How much? Do they still believe in distributing taxpayer money based on race (reparations)?
